I can't speak to how accurate these situations are when it comes to actual modern warfare. Killing a hostage-taker with a well-placed shot, only to have the woman he held go for a weapon to use against you. Creeping through a home filled with both enemies and non-combatants, and the snap decision you must make about whether a woman is cowering backward in fear or going for a detonator. Playing as a young Arabic girl while she is trapped underneath the rubble next to her dead mother. You'll also remote-control planes packed with explosives and take down enemy helicopters because it fits both the "Rule of cool" and a tactic that could reasonably be utilized by guerrilla forces. At one point, you'll wield a sniper rifle with armor-piercing rounds, picking off distant people and vehicles while accounting for bullet drop and wind. Modern Warfare does a good job of putting in those " Call of Duty" moments throughout its campaign, but what feels new is the improved level of nuance in the delivery. They have come together as a unit led by Captain Price, who is chasing after the terrorist organization that stole the chemical weapons. During the campaign, you also play as SAS Sergeant Kyle Garrick, who responded to a terror attack in London, and Karim, who leads a rebel faction in the fictional country of Urzikstan. You first play as a CIA officer named Alex, who was part of a covert operation that failed to secure Russian chemical weapons.
On the surface, it could seem odd for the series to return to modern times with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, but despite the familiarity of the title and setting, the game manages to feel relatively fresh.ĭiving into the campaign mode, you play through a series of protagonists. It has experimented with other backdrops since, including games such as Infinite Warfare and the Black Ops series.
Early on, the series put down its roots in World War II before moving on to more current battlefields with the excellent Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This chatter will continue even if you have killed the enemies, breaking some of the illusion that has been so carefully created. The Call of Duty franchise has done its fair share of wandering when it comes to its setting. Enemies running up stairs will incur comments from your squad mates. The overly scripted nature of the game shows cracks however. This creates a much more natural introduction of enemies, even though they are spawning just around the corner it completely blends in unlike some sequences in COD 4. Enemies spawn on rooftops or in alley ways and generally run through or along your field of vision. It’s good to see that the infinite respawns are a thing of the past. I definitely prefer more run and gun gameplay, the regenerative health was almost abused as a time wasting device. I started the game on hardened, a recommended difficulty, but realised quickly that during combat I was spending more time behind a wall or objects than I was shooting foes. In the open you are extremely vulnerable to bullet fire which can significantly jolt your vision and partially blinds you with red blood on your screen. The game saves often if you die you won’t be repeating much of the game.
I’m not ashamed to admit I died a lot on regular, that’s not to say the game was overly hard. It’s clear a lot of time was spent on these parts unfortunately some of the other gameplay suffers from this favouritism.
On the PC the multiplayer while fun and polished comes off lacking some of the features that are generally taken for granted in most multiplayer games.ĭuring missions the game sets itself up for carefully designed sequences, such as riding a snowmobile, driving a vehicle on a runway or even running over rooftops. It is perhaps its own pace that lets the game down and the fact that the general gameplay doesn’t quite reach heights of the carefully crafted game segments which you may not have much control over. Modern Warfare 2 is all about jumping you from one action hotspot to another without giving you much room to breathe or take stock of what you were just doing. Old faces will return, voiced well, with much of the story being told in between missions through voice conversations between these key characters. It is perhaps both a game strength and a weakness that there is very little time spent in the one area.
The action will take you around the globe for some very quick fire missions only to jump you back somewhere else for more action. The game takes place 5 years after Call of Duty 4 and allows you to play a few different characters through the story. It features a strong multiplayer component and a variety of co-operative modes. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a first person shooter featuring high amounts of level variety and some intricately crafted single player sequences.
